Jury Deliberating in Case of Former Police Officer Accused of Sexually Assaulting Girl
A 12-member jury remains behind closed doors deliberating, in day five of the trial of a former Pharr Police Officer.
It’s been six hours now that jurors have been trying to reach a verdict and decide whether 26-year-old Erasmo Mata is guilty of two counts of sexual assault of a minor.
The state and the defense presented their closing arguments this afternoon.
Prosecutors arguing that regardless of whether the alleged victim lied about her age, the law states that intercourse with a 16 year-old child is a crime as the girl is not of age to give consent.
On the other hand, defense attorneys tried convincing the jury that there is no concrete evidence to link Mata to having sex before the girl’s 17th birthday in October of 2013.
If a verdict isn’t reached by tonight, jurors will have to reconvene on Thursday, as the court is closed tomorrow in observance of Veterans Day.
