This is the third time Secretary Mayorkas pays a visit to the Rio Grande Valley. He says though the number of unaccompanied minors crossing into the US has decreased — there’s still a long way to go.
The Livestock and Agricultural Exhibition of the Rio Grande Valley was organized by the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce in 1939. The first show was held in 1940. Last year, tradition was broken after the livestock show closed their doors to the public for the first time in 60 years.
The Donna Detention Facility has been seeing an influx of undocumented migrants since it opened earlier this year. This 180,000 square feet facility is able to house 500 people. Border patrol agents say the center is currently operating at over capacity.
The bill suggests adding at least 4 regional processing centers to deal with the influx of migrants and hiring additional personnel, including 150 immigration judges and 300 assylum officers, in an effort to prevent people from being detained at crowded facilities for long periods of time.
