A riot at the Webb County Jail left two inmates in the hospital with minor injuries.
The incident happened today at around 4:40 in the morning. According to the Webb County Sheriff’s Office, the inmates were part of a Mexican mafia gang. They allegedly began the riot after jail guards searched their cells to look for contraband.
As officers went inside the cell, two guards were assaulted with a closed fist to the face. A statement by the Sheriff’s Office says prisoners started a fire using an electronic device. After several verbal warnings, the Special Operations and Response team was activated. Officers deployed a distraction device as a warning but they continued.
During this riot, camera equipment, a window, beds and tables were destroyed. Damages are expected to be about 29 thousand dollars.
Officers who were assaulted were cleared of injuries by the medical unit at the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. Two inmates were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. 25 convicts have been placed in a secured area as a result of the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office has released the names of those involved in the riot, but not their mugshots. Those involved are facing charges of arson, engaging in organized criminal activity, criminal mischief, assault on a public servant, starting a riot and escape.
The investigation continues in this case. In a statement, Sheriff Martin Cuellar congratulated his staff for acting with courage and following protocol, adding this was an isolated incident that has not been seen before.
